Thomas V. Dempsey
Thomas V. Dempsey was born July 30, 1906 in Rye to Patrick and Mary O'Halpin Dempsey. He and his family resided at 10 Park Lane, they were active members of Resurrection Church. Thomas's family was considered rather large, it consisted of his father, Patrick, his mother Mary, his brothers Edward, John, James, Lawrence, Daniel L. and Patrick Jr. and his sisters Margaret, Mary, Frances, Marcella and Ursla. All the kids were educated in Rye Schools.
Thomas’s father was an Irish immigrant, his highest level of education was eighth grade and he was a very successful gardener. His mother was also an Irish immigrant, she had an elementary school education and was a full time mom to her 13 children.
Thomas Vincent Dempsey married Anna Catherine Gehlhaus in Rye, New York, on July 1, 1935, when he was 28 years old. The couple would reside in the Bronx for the next 30 years.
Thomas enlisted on October 7, 1943, when he was 37 years old and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
AS A MEMBER OF THE 193 RD SIGNAL REPAIR COMPANY, HE INSTALLED AND REPAIRED TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH STATION EQUIPMENT. ENLISTED ON OCTOBER 7, 1943. SERVED IN BONN, GERMANY, LYON AND PARIS, FRANCE, AND ASH CHURCH, ENGLAND, FROM DECEMBER 16, 1944 TO OCTOBER 31, 1945. TRANSFERRED TO THE HEADQUARTERS COMPANY, 263RD INFANTRY, IN APRIL 1945. HONORABLY DISCHARGED ON NOVEMBER 5, 1945.
After the war, Thomas resumed his job at Westchester Country Club. He would work there for 43 years, being the Beach Club manager for many. His family would move from the Bronx to Harrison in 1968.
Thomas Vincent Dempsey died on October 1, 1975 at United Hospital. He was 72.
