Oliver Z. Balf
Oliver Balf was born August 5, 1927 in Rye, New York, to Celia Ainbinder, age 30, and Theodore Balf, age 37. He had one brother George. In Rye his family lived above his fathers store, Balf's Jewelry, at 21 Purchase Street.
He graduated from Rye High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy at the age of 17 in early 1945. He served as a flight mechanic in Pensacola, Fl. (See Discharge Record)
After WWII he became an acclaimed artist. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
He married Nancy Miller on April 17, 1952, in Cook, Illinois. They had three children during their marriage.
Oliver Z. Balf of Rockport, MA, renowned and beloved artist and founding faculty of Montserrat College of Art, died suddenly in Israel on Oct. 15, 2010 at the age of 83.
At the time of his death he was survived by wife Nancy (Miller), sons Michael and wife Rachel of Israel, Thomas and wife Donna of Gloucester, Todd and wife Patty of Beverly and seven grandchildren.
Memorial Service was held on Nov. 28, 2010 at the Rockport Public Library.
