Joseph P. Foley

Joseph P. Foley was born in New Jersey January 31, 1926 to Eugene and Lillian Foley. He had three brothers Vincent, Eugene and Paul and two sisters Elizabeth and Julia. In Rye his family lived at 10 Valley View Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Joseph was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1944. Joseph was a Home Room President and a star end on the football team. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.


Joseph was trained as an electicians mate at the Naval Training School in St. Louis,MO. He was assigned to serve in the Pacific Theatre on a LSM - (Landing Ship Medium).

Landing Ship Medium (LSM) were amphibious assault ships of the United States Navy in World War II. Of a size between that of Landing Ships Tank (LST) and Landing Craft Infantry (LCI), 558 LSMs were built for the USN between 1944 and 1945. The majority of vessels built on this frame were regular transports, while several dozen were converted during construction to specialized roles.
