John V. McDonnell Lufkin was born on August 21, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, his father, John McDonnell, was 36 and his mother, Marie, was 23. His father died at age 40 and is mother remarried his step father Elgood Lufkin. In Rye along with his brother Thomas, his family lived at Country Gardens and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. John was a 1943 graduate of Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox, MA., where he was class president. He had also attended Canterbury School, New Milford, Conn.and graduated Yale University.

John would continue his Navy studies at Holy Cross College and he served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He married Anna Elizabeth Jones on March 23, 1946, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They had 5 children in the.ir marriage
