John S. Branch

John Sterling Branch was born on November 30, 1908, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Ada Wilson, age 23, and Walter Branch, age 23. In Rye his family lived at 20 Purdy Ave. John attended Howard University in Washington, D.C.,

He married Fannie N Horrington in Tarrytown, New York, on October 31, 1929, when he was 20 years old and they had one daughter together.

During World War II, John enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was with the 823 Amphibious Truck Company and served in the Pacific Theatre. Negro port and amphibious truck companies were attached to Army and Marine divisions and corps for the invasions of the Pacific islands, notably Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

John married Mami Scholl in New Rochelle in April of 1944 and they had four children. He was employed for 23 years, as a sky cap with the East Side Airline Terminal in New York City.

John S. Branch, 59, of 40 Chauncey Avenue, New Rochelle, died suddenly Sunday in New Rochelle Hospital. November 10, 1968 and was buried in East Farmingdale, New York.

In addition to his father, survivors included his wife, Mami Scholl, their four children; Guy of the home address, Patricia Mohammed of New Rochelle, Mrs. Ann Turner of Port Chester, and Mrs. Sandra Midon of Embudo, N.M.; and five grandchildren.
