BIOGRAPHY
John J. Gowan
John "Jack" Gowan was born on September 24, 1921, in Rye, New York, to Mary Rutherford Gray, age 25, and John Joseph Gowan, age 29. He had one sister Mary. In Rye his family lived at
200 North St
and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
John was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1940. He served as an officer in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy, then in Great Neck, L.I. , during World War II and served on convoys and as a deck officer before and after the war.
He was the shipping operations manager with Gotaas-Larsen Inc a Manhattan shipping fir.m Before Joining Gotaas-Larsen eight years ago he worked for serveral other New York City shipping companies.
He was a member of the Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and parishioner of the Church the Resurrection in Rye,
John "Jack" Gowan died on October 1, 1978, in Port Chester, New York, when he was 57 years old.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his mother, his wife Mrs Evelyn M Anderson Gowan, a son John J. 3rd and a daughter Karen L Gowan and al sister Elizabeth Dion Gowan of Rye.
