John Frederick "Fred" Henne

John Frederick "Fred" Henne was descendant of the Kniffen/Sniftln family who settled In Rye in the late 1600s. Fred was born Sept 6, 1910 to Alfonse and Sarah Kniffen Henne. He had one brother Robert. In Rye his family lived at 81 Locust Avenue and were members of Christs Church.

Fred enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served In the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 when he was a firefighting specialist third class He was also a firefighting Instructor at the Naval Training Station in Newport RI

On December 4, 1952 he married Claire Hildreth Seller in Wilton, CT.

For 33 years Fred was employed by the Rye National Bank where he worked as an accountant and several other positions.

During the early 1960s he left the bank and went to work for the CM Almy & Son Clerical supplies company in Rye as a bookkeeper He retired in 1972.

He joined the Rye Fire Department at the age of 17 and spent much of his life as a volunteer firefighter. As a member of the Rye Volunteer Fire Department he belonged to the Poningo Engine and Hose Company.

He was a member of Christ Church in Rye.

John Frederick "Fred" Henne a former Rye fire chief died at his home' in Rye on Sunday July 16 , 1989. He was 78

He is survived by his wife two sons Girard Garretson Henne of New Paltz NY and John Frederick Henne of Shelburne NH a brother Robert K Henne of Westbrook Conn and Daytona Beach FUl and a grandson

Fred died in 1990. He served in the Navy as a Fire Fighter Instructor, stationed in Lakehurst, NJ. He later served as Chief of the Rye Volunteer Fire Department and was a long term employee of the Rye National Bank and later C. M. Almy & Sons. His first son, Girard G. Jerry Henne served in the Navy and later as a NY State Trouper His second son, John F. Henne served in the Army in Vietnam with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
