BIOGRAPHY
James J. Coughlin
James J. Coughlin was born 3/26/1925 to James and Margaret Costello Coughlin in Port Chester. His father, James, was 47 and his mother, Margaret, was 33. He had two brothers and four sisters. In Rye his family lived at
21 Grapal St.
and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He attended Resurrection Grammar School in Rye and graduated from Rye High School in 1943.
James enlisted and served during World War II. He was with the Armored Division of the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged in Nov. 1943.
James J. Coughlin began working for The Daily Item in 1944 and retired in 1984. He was a pressman with Gannett Westchester Newspapers and a lifelong resident of Rye. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection and a member of its Usher Society. Mr. Coughlin lived with his brother, Daniel, in Rye, and never married. He was a member of a close Rye family.
James was a favored uncle to many nieces and nephews and was referred to by many Rye youths as "Uncle Jimmy". He was an avid sports fan and golfer who frequented the Rye Golf Club. He also was a member of the Rye Volunteer Fire Department.
James J. Coughlin died 4/17/1988 at United Hospital in Port Chester after suffering from cancer. He was 63.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his brother
Daniel P. Coughlin
, three sisters, Mary Archer of Port Chester, Ellon DAngelo of Rye and Patricia McNamara of Elmhurst, N.Y. A brother, John M. Coughlin and a sister, Ann Kilmonick; died before him.
