Henry Underhill Halsted

Henry William Underhill Halsted was born on February 8, 1913, in New York to Emma Bertha Schmid, age 33, and Henry Underhill Halsted, age 53. He had five sisters. In Rye his family lived at 611 Milton Rd and were members of Christ's Church.

Henry was a member of one of Rye's oldest families which at on time owned most of the land from the Oakland Bench waterfront to Milton Creek. His ancestors traced back onto 1651 to Jonas Halsted of Hempstead Long lsland, the father of Ezekiel Halstead who later moved to New Rochelle In 1701 and then to Rye in 1741.

Henry attended Brunswick School, Greenwich; Clark School, Hanover, N. H., and Cornell University. Before the war he was working with the auditing department at Playland.

He married Miss Ethel Amanda Shepard on January 5, 1938 in Pound Ridge, NY.

Henry enlisted on March 12, 1942, in Yaphank, New York, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was 29 years old. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged December 1, 1945.

Henry was a member of the Milton Point Engine & Hose Company of the Rye Fire Department.

He died on November 20, 1985, in Rye, New York, at the age of 72.
