Helene Houston

Helene Houston was born on June 12, 1922, in Paris, France, her father, Harold, was 27, and her mother, Renee, was 20. She had one brother Gerald. In Rye her family lived at 347 Oakland Beach Avenue. Helene was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1940 and active in many activities.

She graduated from Russell Sage College in May, 1944 with a BS in Physical Education.

After college she was head of the Physical Education Department for Greenpoint LI Public Schools. In 1945 she accepted an appointment and served with the American Red Cross during World War II both at home and abroad.

Miss Houston Now In Europe
Miss Helene L Houston daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H S Houston 347 Oakland Beach Avenue Rye has arrived in the European theater as an American Red Cross staff assistant. Until her Red Cross appointment Miss Houston was head of the physical education department fat the Greenport LI public schools. She la a graduate of this Rye High Scholl received her B S degree from Russell Sage College and also attended Purdue University.

After her stint with the Red Cross she resumed her education at the University of Iowa. Helene married Charles Smith on December 21, 1947 in Sioux City Iowa.
