BIOGRAPHY
 
Frank D. Carroll

Frank D. Carroll was born March 4, 1907 in New Bedford, Mass. to John and Margaret Carroll. In Rye his family lived at 66 Milton (Blindbrook Apartments) Road and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

He graduated from New Bedford High School and Harvard College where he completed his courses in three years and received his diploma in February 1929 when he was in his freshman class at Yale University School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1932.

Rye Doctors And Nurses Called For Service With Armed Forces

Dr. Carroll served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was honorably discharged in June 1943 for medical reasons (acute appendicitis).

Dr. Carroll would go on to serve on the Medical Advisory Board for the Selective Service System. He was commended by the Selective Service as follows: " Your service was an outstanding example of your patriotism, loyalty and devotion to duty"

He had interned at Charles V. Chaplin Hospital and then Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. before starting his ophthalmology training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Mass. After his residency there he became a Research Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York. He was then appointed to the attending staff and was gradually promoted till he retired as Clinical Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Carroll was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Ophthalmological Society, which now has over one thousand members. He published numerous articles over many years in ophthalmological journals regarding eye conditions especially diseases of the optic nerve.

Dr. Carroll also had a private office in Rye, NY from which he retired in 1990 and was in charge of the Eye Department of the United Hospital in Port Chester, NY for twenty eight years and had a free eye clinic there.

Dr. Carroll's first wife, the former Harriet Conlin, died in 1952. Their child Anne Claire, now Ms. Anne Furman, resides in Albany, NY as do granddaughters Alissa Gail Furman and Rebecca Austin Furman. In 1955 Dr. Carroll married his present wife the former Shirley Ann Glass. They have a son Edward John, daughter-in-law Maureen Cunningham Carroll and a grandson Edward William Carroll of Harrison, NY.

Frank D. Carroll M.D. of Rye New York died on Wednesday, July 24, 2002

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Church of the Resurrection, Rye, NY. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Rye Brook, NY.
