Rye Servicemen Meet Aboard Ship In Far Pacific
Two former Rye High School students. Warrant Officer Don Drummond son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Drummond, 22 Elmwood Avenue, and Seaman Rene A. Hirst, son of Mr., and Mrs. Fred I. Hirst 50 Hill Street, met recently somewhere in the Pacific. One evening Hirst, who is on an LST. went aboard the S. S, Joseph McKenna, where Drummond was stationed, and they had dinner and got homesick together, according to a letter received by Mrs. Hirst from Drummond telling her of the meeting. "It seems strange" writes Drummond, "that in this place so many thousand miles from that small town which we fondly call home, our paths should once again cross."

He married Mary Gibson on August 4, 1946, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had four children in 11 years.

Donald Ryder Drummond died on August 1, 2002, in Pleasanton, California, when he was 80 years old.
