Arthur J. Donohue

Arthur J. Donohue was born September 8, 1913 in New Rochelle to Jennie Fitzpatrick, age 32, and Arthur Joseph Donohue, age 34. He had one brother Eugene and a sister Genevieve. Tragically, their father died in 1919 and their mother in 1924 and the children moved in with their Aunt and Uncle. In Rye his family lived at 11 Blind Brook Lane and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Before the war he was an employee of John Moroney, Rye grocer and fruitier.

Arthur served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Bronze Star recipient

Arthurs served as a Boatswain Mate 1st class aboard the USS American Legion 30 Sep 1941- 30 Jun 1943, USS Mount Vernon AP-22 31 Oct 1943, Spicewood AN-53 30 Sep 1944 - 31 Dec 1945. See Muster Rolls

In the U.S. Navy, the ship's Boatswain is a Warrant Officer who serves as a subject matter expert and assists the first lieutenant by supervising the deck force in the execution of major seamanship functions and the maintenance of topside gear. The ship's Boatswain supervises cargo handling and inspects and maintains rigging and deck gear. His duties also include supervising anchoring, mooring, fueling, towing, transferring of personnel and cargo, and the operation and maintenance of ship's boats. The ship's Boatswain is in charge of what the Navy deems "unusual" seamanship operations

After the war, Arthur married Eleanor Lawrence on March 2 1945 at the Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck. He was an officer in the Rye Fire Department.

Arthur and his wife left their home 427 Barry Avenue in Mamaroneck. In December 1947 they left for the West Coast where he was stationed as a Chief Boatswain's Mate in the Navy.

Arthur J Donohue of San Diego Naval Base CA a former employee of John Moroney Rye grocer and fruitier died after a lingering illness on Thursday, March 17, 1949, he was thirty-five years old.

At the time of his death, he was survived in addition to his wife by a brother Eugene Donohue and a sister Mrs Albert Semmelroth both of Byram and a son Arthur Donohue Jr aged two.
