Alexander H. Ardrey

Alexander Hayden Ardrey was born on August 10, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Evelyn Miller, age 23, and Alexander Hayden Ardrey, age 22. In Rye his family lived at 180 Grace Church St. and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Alexander attended Hotchkiss, the Thacher School and was a graduate of Princeton University

Alexander served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He served overseas in the Ninth Air Force as a lieutenant.

Activated as 9th Air Force on 8 April 1942, the command fought in World War II both in the Western Desert Campaign in Egypt and Libya and as the tactical fighter component of the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe, engaging enemy forces in France, the Low Countries and in Nazi Germany.

On July 10, 1948 he married Miss Marie Therese Verine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rene. Verine, of St. Cloud, France.

He spent his career at Chase Manhattan Bank where he was a loan officer. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Alexander Hayden Ardrey, Jr. 89, of Lynchburg, Va. died on Monday, April 2, 2012.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Marie-Lucie McTighe of Afton, VA; Jacqueline Juhasz of Wilton, CT; Alice Bucher of Aurora, CO; Elliott Ardrey of Palmyra, Va; two sisters; Evelyn Mumm of Sylva, NC; Mary Secary of Ft. Myers, FL, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Westminster Canterbury chapel. Reverend Todd Vie officiated.
