Robert Mertz was June 10, 1931 in Port Chester to Margaret Moroney Mertz of Rye and the late Henry F. Mertz. He grew up on 51 Palisade road with his father, mother, a sister Maureen and a brother William. Robert was an avid boy scout and won a service star as well as a salvage award during WW2 from the Boy Scouts troop in Rye as well as participating in many events such as helping to run the scouts pinewood derby. He graduated from Rye High School in 1949 and became a firefighter before joining the Navy and serving on the USS Sierra during the Korean war.

His brother's name was Billy, and he had a sister Maureen..  (No relatives named Harvey or Lawrence)

He married his HS Sweetheart Pauline Minitti.  They lived on Theodore Fremd Ave, and then York Ave,  (Both in Rye) where they raised their three children.  James, Bethanne and Chip.
