Richard A. Coccola was born in New York on October 15th, 1932. He lived on Loder St. in Rye with his mother, Irene, his father, Anthony, and his older brother, Robert. In high school, he went by the nickname "Coke." Coccola was a tri-sport athlete, as he was a member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. In baseball, he was a first baseman. During his senior year playing varsity basketball, the Garnets had a 13 and 2 record. In addition to dedicating much of his time to athletics, he was a valuable member of the Leaders Club, Spanish Club, and Glee Club. He graduated from Rye High School in 1950. He then attended Niagara University in Lewiston, New York. Richard Coccola enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Estes in the Korean War.
