Oscar E. Fornander
Oscar E. Fornander was born in New York November 7,1916 to Oscar and Hilma Larrson Fornander. He had a brother Ernest and two sisters Eleanore and Eve. In Rye his family lived at 39 Grapal St. and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Oscar was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1936. In high school he was a junior track coach, a member of the Self Reliant Club and worked on the yearbook committee.
After high school he was working as an athletic director at the YMCA and at the Hobby Club in Rye.
Oscar enlisted July 7, 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Miss Kathryn M. Kohlman of Brooklyn April 5, 1944 at the Rye Presbyterian Church. They would have two children during their marriage.
Oscar would serve as an Aviation Machinist Mate 1st class for 3 years and 3 months until his honorable discharge October 11, 1945.
After the war, Oscar worked very hard securing housing for veterans in Rye and was Co- Chairman of the Veterans Housing Committee.
During this period he was very active in the Rye YMCA as a coach and trainer. Oscar officiated boxing matches and ran children's fishing rodeo's. He was a charter member of the Rye Fish and Game Club.
Oscar was a career tinsmith working for 35 years with Electrolux Co. of Greenwich, retiring in 1982.
Oscar E. Fornander died February 13, 1986 at United Hospital after a brief illness. He was 69
At the time of his death , he was survived by his wife, a son Bruce, a daughter Peggyann and six grand children. He was also survived by brother Ernest and two sisters Eleanore Williams and Eve Gerster.
