John Sidney Armstrong married Vera Amanda Klaes in Yonkers, New York, on June 7, 1941, when he was 26 years old. They had two children during their marriage.

Fourteen Rye men were in the group of Army selectees that left this morning from Mamaroneck railroad station following brief ceremonies at 8:30 at the headquarters of Draft Board 750 in Barry Avenue school. Friends and relatives went to Mamaroneck for the send-off and there were a number of Rye officials in the gathering. Rye men accepted by the Navy, who left on January 21, included: John S. After the war, John worked for Westchester Joint Waterworks in Mamaroneck, N.Y. He was a lifelong member and ex-chief of the Halstead Manor Fire Company in Mamaroneck. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion of Larchmont, N.Y.
John S. Armstrong, a retired superintendent, died on February 15, 1997, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida, at the age of 81, and was buried in Rockledge, Florida.
At the time of his death, survivors included his sons, John Armstrong of Rochester, N.Y., and William Armstrong of Melbourne; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. , Services were held at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, north of Melbourne. Burial followed in Florida Memorial Gardens.
