Joseph Bloom

Joseph Bloom was born on February 3, 1915, in New Rochelle, New York, to Ida Saer, age 31, and Louis (Judah Lev) Bloom, age 40. The census records show his families Home in 1940: New Rochelle. Joe was a graduate of New Rochelle High School.

USS_PogyJoseph Bloom was a US Navy Submariner serving in WWII from 1941-1945 on the USS Pogy, which was rated the 16th top submarine out of the top 25, sinking the most Japanese tonnage.

USS Pogy (SS-266), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the pogy, or menhaden. She was credited with sinking 16 ships totaling 62,633 gross register tons during World War II.

Joe married Katherine Fraioli in March 1945 in St. Vito's Church in Mamaroneck NY

After the war, Joe had a Service Station in New Rochelle for a number of years. Then he went into the Luncheonette business in Mamaroneck, NY with his wife, from 1961 until his retirement. He had also been a Manager of Bloom & Bloom Clothing Store in Rye, NY.

Joe lived in New Rochelle, NY, for many years before he moved his family to Robbinsville, NJ in June 2003.

He was a member of American Legion, Post #31 in Trenton and a longtime member of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII. He loved the Submarine service and was happy that he chose that branch of service.

Joe truly loved his country and his flag. Joe was loved by family, friends and acquaintances and will be remembered as a gentle man and a real gentleman. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Joe was a Harley-Davidson man and owned 8-10 motorcycles during his earlier lifetime.

Joseph Bloom, age 90, of Robbinsville, NJ passed away September 24, 2005 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Katherine (Fraioli) Bloom with whom he just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary; his son Ronald Bloom of Bordentown, NJ; his granddaughter and her husband, Jaclyn and Michael Zefutie of Robbinsville; two great-grandchildren Adriana and Christian Zefutie; a brother and sister-in-law Sid Bloom and his wife Annette; and many nieces and nephews.

Joes other eight brothers and one sister are deceased. Joe and Katherine had another son who passed away in 1991, Robert Bloom who left behind his children, a son and daughter-in-law James and Olivia Pompi and two grandchildren James, Jr. and Sara Pompi. James has been in the Navy for 18 years, serving in Spain and Italy and is now stationed in Virginia.

Funeral services were held at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ.
