Stephen J. O’Reilly

Stephen J. O’Reilly was born April 13, 1922, in Rye to Stephen J. and Margaret A. Kirby O'Reilly. In Rye he and his parents including his 3 sisters Jacqueline, Jean, Claire, and his younger brother Thomas lived at 506 Midland Ave. Stephen’s father had a college education, and worked as a superintendent at a sewer plant. Stephen’s mother had a high school education, and was a homemaker. The family were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Stephen was a proud member of the Rye High School class of 1940. In high school Stephen participated in drivers club, and played for the varsity football and basketball teams. After high school Stephen worked for the Homelite Corp. in Port Chester NY. In October of 1942, Stephen enlisted and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II..

After the war, he moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Maryland. On May 13, 1950, he married Rosemary Maloney at Blessed Sacrament Church in Chevy Chase, Md. They would have six sons.

Stephen was employed in the Washington, D.C. area. He was an engineer with O'Brien and Gere Construction since 1987, He previously worked with I Leo Butler CoIntercounty Construction; and was owner, vice, president and general manager of Instate Construction Co. He also was an independent consulting engineer. He loved to fix and collect old cars, including a 1929 Buick," his wife said”.

Stephen J. O'Reilly, an engineer who grew-up in Rye, died Sept. 8 1988 at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore of leukemia. He was 66.

At the time of his death, In addition to his wife, Mr. O'Reilly' was survived by six sons, Stephen of Washington, D.C., Brian of Marietta, Ga., Kevin, of Kensington, Md., Denis of Bethesda, Md., and Thomas and Patrick, both of Chevy Chase, Md.; two sisters, Clair Hannon' of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jean O'Reilly of Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren.
