William John Mosher
William J. Mosher was born on November 20, 1921, in Harrison, New York, to Theresa Selina Batten, age 32, and Samuel Norton Mosher, age 32. In Rye his family lived on Pleasant Ridge Road and were members of Christ's Church. William was a 1938 graduate of Harrison High School and Massachusetts State College class of 1942.
William served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was trained at Notre
Dame University and he received his
commission from the 10th Midshipman Class at Northwestern University,
and had advanced training at Norfolk,
Va.
William served as Communication Officer on the USS Wilkes DD-441. The ship was awarded 5 Battle Stars.
Historically, during World War II and the Korean War, commendations called "battle stars" were issued to United States Navy warships for meritorious participation in battle, or for having suffered damage during battle conditions. As an example, the USS Enterprise (CV-6) received 20 battle stars for her combat service in World War II, more than any other U.S. vessel during World War II.
The USS Wickes DD-441 served in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Southwest Pacific. Lieut. Mosher, was on active sea duty for twenty-three months. He did convoy and combat duty in the North Atlantic and covered the invasion of Sicily.
William also served in the Southwest Pacific taking part in the Cape Gloucester landings, the operations on the Admiralty Islands and on New Guinea as division officer and department head. He then served on the staff of the Commander Fleet Operational Training Command in the Pacific.
William married Judith Boynton Taylor in Los Angeles, California, on March 5, 1946, when he was 24 years old. They would have four children
During the Korean War he served as Executive Officer and Port Director in Long Beach, California. He retired a Lt. Commander.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bradenton, FL, former Claims Manager for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Buffalo New York and a member of U. S. S. Wilkes Association, S A E Fraternity.
William John Mosher died on June 1, 2009, in Bradenton, Florida, when he was 87 years old.
At the time of his death he was survived by wife, Louise of Bradenton; son William John, Jr. of Huntington Beach, CA; daughters, Elizabeth Preston of Signal Hill, CA, Ann MacGregor of Alpine, AZ, Margaret Rising of Huntington Beach, CA; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
William was buried in Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY.
