Walter R. Hobkirk was born in New York January 23 ,1912. In Rye his family lived at Rye Presbyterian Church and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Walter served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Rev. Walter R. Hobkirk, 88, died October 10, 2001 (Wednesday) at the Clifton Springs Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife Marietta in 1980; four brothers and a sister. He survived by his sons, Douglas of Seattle, WA, David of Newark, NY; and his daughter, Marjorie Hobkirk of Scortsdale, AZ; six grandchildren, Morgan Hobkirk of Anchorage, Alaska, Peter and Andrew Hobkirk-Frerichs of Scottsdale, AZ; Ian Hobkirk of Long Island, Audra Hobkirk of Middlebury, VT, Nathan Hobkirk of Newark. NY; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Rev. Hobkirk was born January 23, 1913 in Waddington, NY the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Robertson Hobkirk. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1 932 and Syracuse University in 1938. He then went on to Union Theological Seminary in New York City graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 1941. His first position was as Assistant Minister in the Rye Presbyterian Church, Rye, NY. It was there that he met and later married Marietta Banks of Hartford, CT who was the Dean of Girls at the Rye High School.
In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy as a chaplain and was commissioned as a Lieutenant J.G. He married in July of 1944 prior to going overseas. He was assigned at times with the Coast Guard, Navy and Marines serving in the Pacific and later with the occupational forces in China, He was made a full Lieutenant in 1945.
Following the war, he accepted a position as minister of the Park Presbyterian Church in Newark, New York and served as such from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. He and his wife raised three children and were active in the community, church, and school. Mrs. Hobkirk had returned to teaching and retired from the Newark Central School. Upon their retirement, they moved to Pittsford, NY where Rev. Hobkirk went to work at the Summerville Presbyterian Church. After his second retirement, he worked with the Pittsford Presbyterian Church as well as doing volunteer work with the Friends of Strong where he was awarded the Hettie Shumway Volunteer Service Award in 1990. He provided pastoral care for countless friends and acquaintances over fifty years of service in the ministry. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. There will be no calling hours.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service 2 P M on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001 at the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark, NY. Private burial will be held at a later date in Hartford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Park Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
