  Shelby V. Timberlake
Shelby Timberlake was born on July 31, 1919 in New York City to the late Shelby V. Timberlake and Muriel Bliss Timberlake and raised in Rye, NY. In Rye his family lived at 66 Mendota Ave and were members of Christ's Church. Shelby graduated from Philips Exeter Academy in 1938 and from Williams College.
Shelby entered service July 1, 1941 and served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. In the South Pacific., he served as an Intelligence Officer and was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group Eleven (MAG-11).
During World War II, MAG-11 participated in combat action in the Solomon Islands, New Britain, Palau, Central Pacific Areas, and the Philippines. MAG-11 was based on the island of Peleliu, Palaus Group.
By April 1945 Shelby, now a Major, had returned to the states and was assigned to Headquarters Squadron Nine, Ninth Marine Aircraft Wing (9th MAW), Cherry Point, North Carolina.
 The 9th MAW had replaced the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in the role of training, equipping, and preparing East Coast Marine Corps Aviation units for combat. It was also responsible for administering all of the airfields in the Cherry Point area.
Shelby received his honorable discharge on December 16, 1945. (see Muster Rolls and Discharge Record)
 He had married Mary Boyd Carreau of Pelham Manor, NY on May 29, 1944 and they would have three daughters.
Shelby was a Vice-President at Murray, Shoen and Homer in New Rochelle, NY. Previously, he had been a Vice-President at Johnson and Higgins for 35 years. As an insurance broker, Shelby specialized in animal insurance including coverage for breeding livestock, laboratory animals, zoo specimens and thoroughbred racehorses.
His two favorite clients were the racehorses, Secretariat and Riva Ridge.
Shelby was a former chairperson of the Pelham Manor Planning Board as well as a trustee of the village of Pelham Manor.
He was past president of the Williams College Alumni Association, the Williams Club in New York City, the John Street Club in New York City, the Animal Air Transportation Association, the Pelham Manor Association and the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, NY.
Shelby was also a board member of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, President of the International Embryo Tansfer Society and committee chairperson of the United States Animal Health Association.
He was a member of the Huguenot Memorial Church and served as a ruling elder and trustee of the church.
Shelby V. Timberlake, Jr., a long time resident of Pelham Manor, NY, died Thursday, November 11, 1999 at his home. He was 80 years old.
At the time of his death, he was survived by three daughters, Lauren Brady of Rye, NY, Pamela Steudler of Falmouth, MA and Elizabeth Timberlake of Harrison, NY. Three grandchildren, Kirstin, Tim and Tommy also survive him. His sister, Betty Timberlake Garritt predeceased him.
A memorial service was held at Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham Manor on Wednesday, November 17, 1999
