Charles Francis Macdonald was born on August 4, 1918, in Port Chester, New York, to Anna Scanlon, age 19, and Charles Francis Macdonald, age 22. He had a brother James and two sisters Anne and Katherine.
In Rye his family lived at Hoghland Hall and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He attended Rye schools and graduated from Rye High School.
On Oct 19, 1942, he and the former Helen Keller were married in Quantico, Va. They would have two sons and two daughters.
Charles enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He served as a corporal in the 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The division was in heavy fighting on Okinawa until 22 June 1945, when the island was declared secure.
The 1st Marine Division slugged it out with the Japanese 32nd Army at such places as Dakeshi Ridge, Wana Ridge, "Sugarloaf Hill" and Shuri Castle. Fighting on Okinawa cost the division 1,655 killed in action.
Charles was awarded the Purple Heart for an injury received in Okinawa in 1945.
After the war Charles was an auto mechanic at the Milton Point Service Station. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Milton Point Engine and Hose Company in Rye. Charles was member of the Resurrection Church in Rye. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 93 in Port Chester.
Charles F. MacDonald Jr., a lifelong resident of Rye, died Sunday October 6, 1985 at the United Hospital in Port Chester after a lengthy illness. He was 68.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by two sons, Robert of Brooklyn and Charles of Roselle, IL, two daughters, Kathy Lasiw of Rye and Patricia Maupin of Fishkill, N.Y.; his brother, James, of Springfield Mass.; his sister, Catherine McMann, of Southbury Conn; and eight grandchildren. Another sister, Peggy McMann, died before him.
