 Joseph G. Arsenault
Joseph George Arsenault was born on January 6, 1926, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Bertha LaMire and Jeremiah Arsenault. He had one sister Agnes and in Rye his family lived on 16 York Ave. Joseph attended Iona Prep for two years before enlisting in April of 1943
Joseph enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the 8th Defense Battalion. See Muster Rolls
The 8th Defense Battalion was commissioned on 1 April 1942 at Tutuila, American Samoa. On 27 May 1942 elements of the battalion began sailing for Wallis Island. The entire battalion completed movement to Wallis by 4 June.
The 8th Defense Battalion (Reinforced) became the headquarters for the Defense Force, Wallis Island which had under it 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, C Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, and additional engineer, transport, and medical detachments. On 25 October 1942, the battalion was attached to the V Amphibious Corps for duty with the 2nd Marine Division in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign.
The battalion landed at Apamama, Gilbert Islands on 28 November 1943. They provided air defense for the area until 21 March 1944 when it embarked and departed for Territory of Hawaii. The battalion arrived in Hawaii by 3 April and established camp on Kauai.
 Rye Marine Is Home From Year Overseas

Marine Pfc. Joseph Arsenault, 18, after spending a year with a Marine battalion in the South Pacific, is at home on furlough this month with his mother, Mrs. Alberta Arsenault, 16 York Avenue, Rye. In his twelve months overseas the Rye Leatherneck saw service in Samoa, Wallis Island, and Hawaii as a 50-cal. machine gunner. He was re-turned to the States in in September of this year for treatment of a tropical ailment. Before going into the service in April, 1943, he attended Iona Prep for two years. He was sent overseas in September, 1943. On completion of his furlough, Pfc. Arsenault will return to the Klamath Falls rehabilitation and training base to await return to active duty.

Joseph married Francina E. Frazier in the early 1950's and they would have one daughter.
Joseph was a career marine and retired from the U.S. Marine Corp. August 31, 1971, having served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. After his service he and his wife would reside in Wheeling, WV.
 Joseph George Arsenault, 80, of Rush Ave., Wheeling, WV, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at his residence. He was a catholic by faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Priscilla Ann Arsenault in1957.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Francina E. Frazier Arsenault; a sister, Agnes Dowling of New York and several nieces and nephews.
