  George Louis Byrnes
George Byrnes was born July 9, 1911 in Rye, NY to the late Edward and Mary Carrigan Byrnes. He had four brothers James, Edward, Walter and Thomas and two sisters Jane and Helen. In Rye his family lived at 546 Milton Road and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. George was raised and educated in the Rye School system.
George enlisted and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Sgt George Byrnes was overseas 27 months five in France as a member of Bat A ,633rd Anti-Aircraft Arty (Automatic Weapons) Battalion
During the Battle of the Bulge George's battalion was assigned to the 80th Infantry Division. The 80th was moved northward to Luxembourg and was hurled against the German salient, fighting at Luxembourg and Bastogne.
By Christmas Day, men of the 80th were side by side with the tanks of the 4th Armored Division, battering forward through murderous opposition to help the 101st Airborne Division, besieged in Bastogne. Over frozen, snow-covered terrain, the attack gained nine bitter miles despite constant machine gun and mortar fire.
The next day, the gap between the rescuers and the besieged was narrowed to 4000 yards. On 28 December, the 80th broke through, bringing relief to the 101st before driving the enemy across the Sure to Dahl and Goesdorf, 7 January 1945, and across the Clerf and Wiltz Rivers by 23 January.
After his honorable discharge, George was married December 21, 1945 in Baltimore, MD to Florence Lindholm. They would have seven children and raise the family in the Rye area.
George worked as a waiter at various local restaurants. He was a volunteer fireman with the Rye Fire Department at Milton Firehouse. Later in life George was a school crossing guard for the Rye Brook Police Department and was a security guard for the Milton Harbor House in Rye, NY.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Florence Byrnes of Rye Brook, NY; sons: George L. Byrnes, Jr. of Ontario, Canada; John Byrnes of Brookfield, CT and David Byrnes, Sr. of Port Chester, NY; daughters: Rosemary Klim of Darien, CT; Susan Byrnes of Bronx, NY; Ann Russo and Katherine Spizzirri, both of Port Chester, NY and Jean Adler of New Rochelle, NY; grandchildren: John, Kristen and Tara Byrnes, David, Jr. and Laura Byrnes, Robert and Brian Massie, Daniel and Jacqueline Russo, Michael and Kelly Spizzirri, Stephanie and Lisa Adler. Brother: James Byrnes of New Rochelle, NY; sister: Georgianna Snyder of Brewster, NY.
He was predeceased by his brother: Jack, Edward, Walter and Thomas Byrnes and sisters: Jane Murphy and Helen Byrnes. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Port Chester, NY. Interment followed at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Rye Brook, NY.
