Marc Saracino

Marc Saracino was born May 1, 1920, in Barile, Italy, to Michele and Camille Saracino. In 1931, He came to Rye, where he attended public schools. In Rye his family lived at 46 High St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Marc enlisted 17 Jun 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He joined a Mobile Salvage Unit of the American Fifth Army at Casablanca for its sweep along the Mediterranean coast to Bizerte and across Sicily the Italian mainland.

Then Marc transferred to a unit of the Seventh Army in France and accompanied the Seventh on its historic drive through Southern France and into Southern and Central Germany. He served in the Army for four years and took part in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.

After the war, Marc opened his first store, Marcs Bootery, in 1945 on Purchase Street in Rye. Eight years later, the Rye Shoe Store opened for business. In 1978, he opened a third store, Marcs Bootery in Bronxville. All three stores were later operated by his two sons.

Marc was a warm, hard working and caring person, according to friends and fellow merchants. Anne Pastor, a real estate agent and former president of Ryes Chamber of Commerce, said, "He was s good merchant and he did his part. He was a fixture on Purchase Street.

He was a fixture on the golf course. He never gave the game up until he had to," I remember him being a very hard working and good-natured guy," said Ted Rogers, owner of Carpet Trends in Rye. He was always very active in community affairs and always a very generous person.

Frank Calo described his friend and golfing partner as being 100 percent a gentlemen." Anything he had, he earned it, .Calo said. Nobody gave him a nickel. He was a good man in every respect. Marc always, 95 percent of the time, had a smile off his face, he always did.. And he had three children, one nicer than the other.

He was active in community affairs and was a member of the Rye Golf Club. One of the founding members of the Rotary Club in Rye, Marc was a recipient of the international service clubs Paul Harris Fellow award. He was also active, through his team sponsorships, in the Rye Little League and the city's Babe Ruth League.

Marc Saracino, shoe store owner, dies at 65 Marc Saracino, the owner of the Rye Shoe Store and Marc's Bootery in Rye and Marc's Bootery in Bronxville, died Thursday April 1, 1986 at his home. He was 85, and had resided in Rye for 55 years.




At the time of his death he was survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Mary Castronovo; a daughter, Sandee Turaeaa of Rockville Centre, L.I.; . twin sons, Marc of Rye and Michael of Mount Kisco; three sisters, Rae Bella of Harrison and Ida Saracino and Carmella Saracino, both of Italy, a brother, Nicola of Italy, and eight grandchildren.
