Gilbert Duffes Carlie Lemon Reid was born on March 9, 1909, in Peterculter East, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, his father, Andrew, was 30 and his mother, Anne, was 22. He married Elizabeth McConnacher on October 10, 1932, in Manhattan, New York. He died in March 1984 at the age of 75. In Rye his family lived on Pine Island. Gilbert enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
