Ellen V. Marrello

Ellen V. Marrello was born in New York in 1914, the daughter of Amelia and Domenico Marrello . She was the youngest of 10 siblings and a graduate of Rye High School. In Rye her family lived at 11 New Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Ellen served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. She served in the Army Nurses Corp. At the start of the war in December 1941, there were fewer than 1,000 nurses in the Army Nurse Corps and 700 in the Navy Nurse Corps. All were women.

With over 8 million soldiers, sailors, and airmen, the needs were more than double those of World War I. Hundreds of new military hospitals were constructed for the expected flow of casualties. By the end of the war, the Army and Army Air Forces (AAF) had 54,000 nurses, and the Navy had 11,000—all women.

Army Nurse Ellen V. Marrello Promoted to Rank of Lieutenant
Kelly Field, Texas. The promotion of army nurse Ellen V. Marrello, of 11New Street. , Rye, to the Rank of 1st Lieut. , was announced this week by Col. Paul S. Blair, Kelly Field base commander. Lieut. Marrello is the chief nurse in the surgical ward at the Kelly Field Station Hospital. She has been stationed here at the San Antonio Air Service Command, since July, 1943 and has been in the service since 1940. She previously served at the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C. In civilian life Lieut. Marrello did nursing at the Fordham Hospital in New York City and at the United Hospital in Port Chester.

Ellen Marrello Peters a former resident of Rye died Wednesday December 7, 1977 in Coolin Idaho where she had lived for the past 35 years.

Ellen was the daughter of Amelia and Domenico Marrello and was a graduate of Rye High School

She graduated from the United Hospital School of Nursing and served with the Air Nursing Corps during World War II.

Ellen attended the Church of the Resurrection In Rye while a city resident .

She was survived by three sisters Sister Marie Bonaventure of Newburgh NY Mrs. Jeanette Agostlno of Port Chester and Miss Mary Marrello of Rye three brothers Frank Marrello of Greenwich Victor Caputo of Rye and Florenxo Caputo of Port Chester and several nieces and nephews.
