Allen E. MacNicol was born Aug. 10, 1895, in New York City to John and Caroline Morgan MacNicol , he was raised in Greenwich CT., where he attended public schools. In 1923 he married Ann Lee and the would have two children.
In Rye his family lived at 9 Hill Street. Allen served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Allen's military career which began with the Connecticut National Guard, included service in 1916 in the Mexican border campaign, involving the pursuit of revolutionist Francisco Pancho Villa. In World War I he served with the U.S. Army in France in the 103rd Field Artillery of the 26th (Yankee) Division.
After the war, he worked in , various capacities for the Munson Steamship Co. in Manhattan, a shipping line that carried passengers and freight to Central and South America.
In 1940, Allen was recalled into the Army and attained the rank colonel. He served in Europe from 1942 to 1945 in various capacities relating to maritime operations, including port commander of Cherbourg and Glasgow. His decorations included the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart for wounds received during, the invasion of France.
 After his discharge, Allen was appointed in 1948 as assistant director of Playland. Two years later he became director of the Westchester County owned amusement park.
He used to walk around the park," said Edward Kilcullen of Eastchester, who succeeded Allen as director of Playland. He kept his eye on what was going on' .
Kilcullen who was director from 1955 to 1980, added that Allen instituted a repairs program for the park, which had deteriorated during the Depression and war years.
"I know he did a lot for Kiddyland, said Kilcullen, referring to the children's section of the park. "He rebuilt that"
After leaving Playland, Allen accepted a position as president of the Wilson Lines, a steamship company in Wilmington, DE. He retired in 1963..
He was the first commissioner for the Boy Scouts in Greenwich. A resident of Rye from 1929 to 1955, he was active in Republican party affairs. He belonged to the National Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; the Whitehall Club, an association of shipping people in New York City; and the West Point Officers Club.
Allan E. MacNicol, director of Playland in Rye from 1948 to 1955, died April 1, 1987 at a hospital In Woburn, MA., after a brief illness. He was 91.
In addition to his wife. Allen was survived by a daughter, Katherine Purcell of Kingston, N.Y.; a son, Allan Jr. of Sherborn, MA; a sister, Lucia Tinsman of Pa, and three grandchildren.
