Bartholomew A. Lalla

Bartholomew Lalla was born on December 12, 1922, in Rye, New York, his father, Michael, was 41 and his mother, Theresa, was 37. He had five brothers and three sisters. Joseph, Gertrude, Frank, Domenico, Peter, Antoinette, Bart and John. In Rye his family lived at 30 High Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Bart was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He served in the Army during WWII, seeing extensive action at the Battle of the Bulge, where he was a Purple Heart recipient.

Two Lalla Brothers Wounded in Action
The Lalla brothers of West Rye, active in athletics at Rye High School, have been in the thick of the fighting overseas. Two of the three sons of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lalla, 30 High Street, were reported wounded, but not seriously. Pfc. Peter Lalla was shot in the right shoulder by a sniper on the island of Leyte in the Pacific and in a letter to his parents stated he would be hospitalized for some time. Attached to the 77th Division, he has been in the service nearly three years and was awarded the Purple Heart. Three months after he went overseas, Pfc. Bartholomew Lalla, 21 years old, has been twice wounded in France. His wounds were "slight," according to word received by his parents. The third son, Pvt. Joseph Lalla, is in the Philippines with an anti-aircraft unit.

Mr. Lalla was the proprietor and owner of the Purchase Street Taxi in Rye.

Bartholomew A. Lalla, a life long resident of Rye, passed away on February 14, 2008.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife the former Mary Schofield, two daughters: Susan Boyce of Mays Landing, NJ, Darlene Lalla of Port Chester, NY and one grandchild Jessica Averbach. He was predeceased by one daughter Diane.
