Richard E. Hickcox was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Port Chester, N.Y., son of the late Clarence Earl and Aurelia (Stickle) Stapper. He had a brother Warren and a sister Patricia. In Rye his family lived at 35 Sanford Street. Richard was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941.
Richard enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Patton's Third Army from 1942 to 1945.
The Third Army After Action of May 1945 states that the Third Army captured 765,483 prisoners of war, with an additional 515,205 of the enemy already held in corps and divisional level POW camps processed between 9 May and 13 May 1945, for a total of 1,280,688 POWs, and that, additionally, Third Army forces killed 144,500 enemy soldiers and wounded 386,200, for a total of 1,811,388 in enemy losses.
 Richard E. Hickcox returned recently from Germany where he served two and a half years in the European theatre as private first class in the Anti-Aircraft, division serving in Pattons army from 1942 to 1945.

He married Alice Sloat April 9, 1946 at the Rectory of The Church of the Resurrection officiated by Father Tully. At the time of his marriage he was working for the Austin Tobacco Company and the couple would be relocating to Tennessee.
By1950 the couple had returned to Rye and Richard was employed as an insurance investigator.
Richard Earl Hickcox, 86, also of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010. At the time of his death, he was survived by ''the love of his life,'' Alyce ''Lolly'' (Sloat), to whom he was married for 64 years;
 He was also survived by his children, Richard Hickcox of W. Nyack, N.Y., Leslie Hickcox of San Diego, Calif., Craig Hickcox of W. Nyack, N.Y., Nanci Zimmerman and her husband, Todd, his granddaughters, Chelsey and Abbey Zimmerman of New Milford; and his sister, Patricia Ingenito of St. Mary's, Ohio.
A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of the Lakes, 3 Old Town Park Road, New Milford, CT. Burial followed in Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, N.Y.
