Hugh J. Greechan

Hugh J. Greechan was born June 6 1919 in Mamaroneck to Hugh and Rose Careen Greechan. He had one brother Harry and in Rye his family lived at 18 Cedar Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He graduated from St Gabriel's High School in New Rochelle.

Hugh enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a Private, Battery C 1th Coast Artillery, 15th Coast Artillery, Ewa, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941.

He served in the U S Army for six years. He left the service as a captain in 1945 and was a captain in the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War.

Hugh married Edwina Balls in December 1942, she passed in 1992.

After the war, Hugh worked for the National Bank of Westchester. He retired as a vice president in 1982 after 30 years working for the bank

Hugh was active in several Rye community groups He was a member of the Rye Fire Department for 30 years serving as a captain and warden He was an usher for the Church of the Resurrection in Rye.

An avid fisherman he was a member of the founding commission for the Rye Municipal Marina. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Retired Officers Association and the American Legion.

He moved to Mount Dora Fla in 1982.He married Alice Duff in 1994 in Mount Dora.

Hugh J Greechan Sr a former Rye resident and bank vice president who survived the Pearl Harbor attack died Tuesday April 1, 1997 at Florida Hospital-Waterman in Eustis Fla He was 77

In addition to his wife, he was survived by a brother Harry Greechan of Denver two sons Daniel Greechan of Ossining and Hugh Greechan of Rye two daughters Rosemary Sexton of South Portland Maine and Kathleen Robots of Camp Lejeune, NC and eight grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Church of the Resurrection in Rye.

I remember Hugh when he was employed at the Rye National Bank
(Before the name change) when I was employed at the
Rye Trust Company…..He was a fine gentleman…
