Charles Wheeler Ferris


Charles Wheeler Ferris was born in Rye on March 7 1911 son of John Hull and Betsy Finney Ferris. He had three brothers Andrew, Matthew and Alvah and three sisters Mabel, Viola and Mary. Charles was educated in Rye schools and in Rye his family lived on Milton Road and were members of Christ's Church.

Charles married Mary Ellen Pickens in Harrison, New York, on March 11, 1936, when he was 25 years old. Before entering the service he was employed by the Department of Public Works in Rye

Charles enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He entered the service on April 27, 1944. He served as a Corporal in the European Theatre of Operations with the 91st Infantry Division, 791st Field Artillery Battalion as a cannoneer from April to August 1945.

In 1944, the division crossed the Sieve River, outflanked the famous Gothic Line, and captured the Futa Pass. For its part in combat, the division was awarded the North Apennines, Po Valley and Rome-Arno campaign streamers.

Charles received his honorable discharge May 12, 1946 and after the war he worked for 30 years as a custodian for the City of Rye.

Charles was a past president of the city's Fish and Game Club and was a former captain of the Milton Point Engine and Hose Co of the Rye Fire Department.



Charies W Ferris a retired custodian for the city of Rye died Wednesday December 1, 1978 at the Westchester County Medical Center at Valhalla: He was 67 and resided at the Rye Colony Apartments Rye

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Lisa) Pickens Ferris of the home address a son the Rev W H Ferris rector of St Simons Anglican Church in North Vancouver British Columbia, three sisters Mrs. Mabel Popp of Norwalk Mrs. Arthur Drummond of Rochester and Mrs. Viola Daur of Boca Raton Fla a brother Alvah Ferris of Harrison and four grandchildren
