John J. Devers

John Joseph Devers was born on August 19, 1914, in New York to Mary Ann Hunter, age 31, and John Joseph Devers, age 36. He had two sister Ellen and Anne and one brother Hugh. In Rye his family lived at 9 Hillcrest Lane and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

John was a graduate of Resurrection School and Rye High School. In high school he was was involved in many activities and clubs and he ran track. After high school he was employed at the Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.

John served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Robertta G Chase of Denver CO Decmber 23, 1944 in Baltimore where he was stationed at the time. They would have one son during their marriage.


After the war John choose Country Club management as his profession. He would manage the University Club in Denver before moving to Michigan. There he manged the Grosse Point Yacht Club. John was also the president of the Detroit Club Managers Association.

John and his family would live in Michigan for the next 25 years.






John Joseph Devers died on January 2, 1987, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, when he was 72 years old.
