Joseph B. Chaffe Jr.
Joseph Chaffe was born on January, 22nd, 1919 in NYC, NY. His family moved to Rye when he was young. In Rye, Joseph and his family lived on 27 Meadow Place and were members of the Presbyterian Church.
His household consisted of his father Joseph, his mother Mary, his younger sister Mary, and their maid Zellia Pine. Joseph’s father had a college education, and worked as a successful salesman. Joseph's mother had a high school education and was a homemaker.
Joseph Chaffe was a proud member of the Rye High School class of 1936. In high school Joseph was known to be self reliant. Oftentimes you would see Joseph playing the sport he loved, football. When he wasn’t playing football, he was either taking part in his chess club, or the stamp collecting club.
After graduation the following year he entered the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, graduating in 1940. After two years with the Chase Bank in New York, Captain Chaffe was drafted in March 1942. Joseph served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received his basic training at Camp Livingston; was transferred to the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., from which he was graduated in December 1942 with the commission of second lieutenant, and detailed to an infantry regiment in Camp Howze, Texas.
Joseph was attached to the service company and later promoted to first lieutenant. In the early summer he was put in command of the anti-tank company of this regiment, and was commissioned captain. Joseph married, Patricia Hinshelwood on January 6, 1945.
Joseph, and Patricia eventually moved to Fresno, California. In California he was a self employed public accountant for 33 years. Joseph passed away on October 2nd, 1995.
