Joseph Gerard Liebhart

Joseph Gerard Liebhart was born on November 1, 1922, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, to Anna Marie Hoffman Liebhart. He had a sister Emy and a brother Henry In Rye his family lived at 217 Purchase St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Joseph enlisted in U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Joseph G. Liebhart served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 as a gunner on a B-17.

He served in the Rhineland and Central Europe and received the World War II Victory Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with three battle stars.

After the war, he married Vera E. Doyle in 1952 at Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, NY. The couple would have two children during their marriage.

Joseph was a Rhinebeck resident since 1986 and a former longtime Pine Plains resident. He retired as a manager from IBM in 1985.

Joseph was a member of the Church of the Messiah, Rhinebeck, the IBM Quarter Century Club and the Red Hook Golf Club.

He, was also a past commander of the Shacameco Post #426 American Legion, Pine Plains, and Past Adjutant of the Dutchess County American Legion.

For many years he was instrumental in the Pine Plains Little League. Joseph was an excellent bowler and golfer; he recorded many 700 series and had one hole-in-one.

Joseph G. Liebhart died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at the Baptist home, in Rhinebeck, NY.

In addition to his wife, Vera of Rhinebeck, he was survived by a daughter Ann Watkins and her companion Dave Feroe of Rhinebeck, a daughter Jo-Ann and her husband Robert Wolfe of Stanfordville, three grandchildren Michael Becwith and his wife Shannon, Robert Joseph Wolfe, and Natasha Elizabeth Wolfe, a sister Emmie Pilch of Danbury, Conn., a brother Henry Liebhart of Long Island and many nieces and nephews.
