Leroy "Roy" J. Thornton
Leroy John "Roy" Thornton was born on December 11, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his father, Roy, was 33 and his mother, Nellie, was 28. He had two brothers Robert and Charles and two sisters Madeline and Doris.
In Rye his family lived at 25 Everett St. and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Roy was a Rye High School Graduate, class of 1937 wher he played tennis was a member of the orchestra as well as many various clubs.
He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Roy was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, serving In Italy and Yugoslavia in the European Theater, as a radio operator.
He married Rosa Lee Rita Talento on October 1, 1950, in Rye, New York. They had four children during their marriage.
He lived In Rye, N.Y. before moving to Windsor In the late 1950's. Roy was a graduate of the Reneselear Polytechnical Institute, Troy, N.Y., class of 1950, and was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and was also active in local community, church, and civic affairs.
He was one of the founding partners of Golden, Thornton, ana Labau Architectural Firm in West Hartford, whose architectural accomplishments included schools, churches, and many commercial buildings throughout the region.
After his retirement in 1970, Roy became a: consultant and senior architect with Jeter, Cook, Jepsen Architects, Inc., Hartford, retiring from there in 1990. He was a member of St. Gabriel's Church, Windsor.
Roy J. Thornton, 74, beloved husband of Rosalie R. (Talento) Thornton, of Windsor, died Sunday (April 3) 1994 at Hartford Hospital.
Besides his loving wife of 44 years, he was survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen R. and Deirdre Thornton of Hartford, Jeffrey F. and Linda Thornton in Rye Town, N.Y., Michael R. and Maria Thornton in Manhattan, N.Y., Robert C. and Kristin Thornton of Windsor; two brothers, Robert and Charles Thornton, both in Florida; two sisters, Dorris Brennan in Florida, Madeline Badolato In Rye, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Eric, Keeley, Nicole, and Brittany Thornton; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Gabriel's Church, Windsor. Burial was in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
