  Whitney B. Powers
Whitney Ballard Powers was born on February 11, 1911, in Rye, New York, to Helen Gillette Ballard, age 26, and Walter Hayward Powers, age 30. He had a brother Walter and a sister Catherine. In Rye his family lived on Windcrest Road and were members of Christ's Church.
Whitney received his education at Choate School at Wallingford Conn and Institute du Carnal in Gataad, Switzerland.
He enlisted July 28, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the Air Forces for over three years, two of which were in the Pacific Theater.

Sgt. Whitney B. Powers, former Milton Point Beach Club tennis coach, now stationed somewhere in China, showed some of his old net form when recently he participated in the first inter-Allied tennis matches held at this base against Chinas leading net stars. Now a Flying Tiger of Maj. Gen. C. L Chennaults Fourteenth Air Force, Sgt. Powers also was former coach of the Delray Beafeh, Fla. , Tennis Association. He lost a close 6-2, 6-4 match to Eddie Ma, the provincial title-holder and ranked in Chinas first ten list. Sgt. Powers is a resident of Windcrest Road, Rye.

After his honorable discharge on January 10, 1946, Whitney was a resident of the Palm Beach, FL area for over 60 years and a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. He married Maxine Winn in Delray Beach, FL on November 22,1947 and they would have two children.
 A highly respected tennis professional, Whitney enthusiastically shared his knowledge and life long passion for the game with his many pupils. His teachings influenced numerous local players, many of whom were ranked statewide and nationally.
He also served as the director of the Southside Tennis Association at Phipps Park for over 20 years until his retirement in 1985.
Whitney B. Powers, 93 years old, of West Palm Beach, Florida, died on Sunday, March 14, 2004 following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Powers who died in 1997.
At the time of his death he was survived by his sister, Louise Sanger of Duxbury, MA; two children, Walter H. Powers, IV and his wife Nina of West Palm Beach, FL, and Nancy Halpin of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, Patrick Halpin, Susan Airheart, Kevin Halpin, Sonya Bahdal, Peggy Powers, and Robert Powers; and four great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, West Palm Beach, FL , with The Rev. Howarth L. Lewis, Jr., Deacon with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating.
