Charles James O'Neill

Charles O'Neill and his twin sister Mary Cecilia were born in 1908 in New York, their father, Michael, was 50, and their mother, Maria, was 41. He lost his father when he was only 2 years old. He had seven brothers and four sisters. In Rye his family lived at 4 Drake Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

He married Miss Margaret Genevieve Dailey June 26, 1938 in Harrisburg, PA.

Charles served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He would serve from January 1, 1943 until retiring from the Navy August 1, 1963

"A resident of 4 Drake Avenue Rye Commander O’Neill was a part-time director of recreation at Purchase and from 1935 to 1938 he taught physical education in the Rye Neck school system. In 1940 he became recreation consultant for the United Service Organizations traveling throughout the country coordinating the work for USO Clubs with that of Army and Navy activities. Since entering the Navy in 1943 he has done welfare and recreational work at various stations throughout the country. Transferred to Washington last April he was made officer in charge of the Recreation Unit Special Services Division Welfare Department Naval Bureau of Personnel."

Rye Man Sent West to Study Softcoal Mining Conditions

Lieut. Comdr. Charles J. O'Neill, of 1 Drake Avenue, Glen Oaks, is one of several investigators sent to the West to study conditions in coal mining communities’ by the Coal Mines Administration. A study is being made by the CM A of medical, sanitary and welfare conditions as part of the agreement which terminated the soft coal strike. Mr. O'Neill has been in the service four years, two of which were spent in Norfolk, Va., as instructor in physical education. He graduated from New York University and received his Master's degree in physical education at Columbia University, after which he taught at F. E. Bellows High School, Rye Neck, and Sharon Springs, N. Y., High School. Mrs. O'Neill is the former Margaret Daily, who was a nurse at the United Hospital. She is now in Harrisburg, PA visiting her family.
