Richard K. Hulbert was born in New York on May 14th, 1928. He lived in Rye at Blind Brook Lodge with his mother, Nancy K. Hulbert, and his father, William C. Hulbert. Before the war, Richard enjoyed travelling all over the world, visiting countries such as England, Switzerland, France and more. Additionally, he was an avid tennis player and won the 1949 singles championship at the Apawamis Club. He was a devout member of the Rye Presbyterian Church, and even took part in leading the Young People's Worship Service. Richard attended Rye Country Day school, where he was the boys' sports editor for the yearbook. He also participated in the school's soccer team. After graduating from Rye Country Day school in 1945, Richard went on to attend the Taft School, before enlisting in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
