He lived with his mother, father, and siblings John and William on 100 Grace Church Street, Rye, NY. Thomas Holmes attended Rye Country Day School and graduated in 1946. During his time in high school, he excelled at academics and soccer, even winning an award in 1939 for soccer. In second grade, Thomas won first prize at his school for the civic cause "War on Worms". Additionally, Thomas Holmes was an avid tennis player and participated in many tournaments for Manursing Island Club. Thomas Holmes pursued a college education at Yale University. During his junior year of attending Yale, Thomas Holmes proposed to marry Miss Joan Barnwell from Greenwich, Connecticut. Thomas Holmes enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
