Allan S. Woods was born in Chester, CT in 1929. In Rye he lived at 97 Captains Lane, with his mother Katherine, father Archie, and his two siblings: Katherine Ruth, and Dorothy. His family also had a German Servant living with them in the 1940s named Mary Porvost. His father worked as a Vice Hindent while his mother was the head of the household. Allan was a Rye Country Day graduate, class of 1945. During his high school years, he was active in many sports but his specialty was field hockey which became a passion for him later on in his life. He traveled to more than 30 different countries across 6 continents, and attended a variety of official tournaments, including every summer Olympic Games between 1976-2004 (except the boycotted Moscow Games in 1980). He also founded the Greenwich Field Hockey Club in 1956, which is still running to this day. Allan enlisted and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War.
