Jack T. Stavrides was born in New York in 1928. Of Greek descent, his parents--James and Catherine--emigrated from Turkey to the US and gave birth to Jack and his three other siblings: Timothy, George, and Anthony. They lived at 61 Purchase Street, and Jack's father was a proprietor. Jack was a great student, being one of the leaders of the Grammar School Group and being one of about a dozen students to receive the perfect attendance award in 6th grade. He attended Rye High School as a part of the class of 1945. Jack participated in extracurricular sports and activities. He joined the high school track team and he was a very involved member of the YMCA, participating in boxing, pool, ping pong, and other games there. He was also the secretary of the Mohican club, which was a trapping group. Jack proudly served his country during the Korean War.
