Leo L. Kornfeld was born on October 31, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. Leo was born to his immigrant parents William and Esther Kornfeld. Leo had a sister, Sally, and brother, Harold. Leo was the head of his school's math club during high school, and was encouraged by his teachers to pursue the occupation of a business actuary. This led Leo to go to the University of Michigan, where he would achieve a BA in math. Leo also achieved a BS and MS at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and attended business programs at Harvard Business School. Leo served in the Korean War with the U.S Navy, he ascended the ranks from Midshipman to Lieutenant Commander in his career. When he moved to Rye Leo lived on Turf Avenue in Rye. Leo married Laura O. Kornfeld and together they had three children: Melanie Grimes, Hank Kornfeld, and Nancy Danielle Rudes.
